Charles’ Obituary John Charles “Charlie” Bohanek, 97, passed away at home Friday January 25, 2019. Charlie was a life long resident of Carteret born on Randolph Street to immigrant Ukrainian speaking parents – Anastasia and Michael – from the Galicia region of Eastern Europe. He was predeceased by his loving wife Irene in 2016 and his 6 sisters and 2 brothers: Mary Bohonek, Catherine Ginda, Anna Bogdanowicz, Esther Smarsch, Victoria Karmonocky, Pauline Melnick, Michael and Demetrius (Jim).

He is survived by his 3 daughters: Beverly Bohanek, Gail Gentry (John) and Charlene Bohanek, 4 grandchildren – Jennifer, Scott, Kaitlin, Bryan and 2 great grandchildren – Taylor and Jordan along with many nieces and nephews. A former Republican Councilman, Volunteer Fireman, Volunteer Fire Chief and Fire Commissioner, Charlie was a local businessman starting out with a soda delivery service then Bo’s Tavern in the Hill Section, the Sherwin Williams Paint Store in the Shopping Center and the Carteret Mobile Park in West Carteret. He was active in local sports (softball pitcher), an avid golfer, card player and musician (drummer).

And let’s not forget he was a great dancer and the favorite Polka partner to Gloria Lisicki. Charlie was a life member of several organizations and Past President of many: Carteret Volunteer Fire Department #1, Carteret Firemen’s Relief Association, Carteret Firemen’s Exempt Association, NJ State Volunteer Fire Chief’s Association, NJ State Exempt Firemen’s Association, NJ State Firemen’s Association. He was a founding member of the Carteret Honorary PBA Local 47, Past President and recipient of The Andrew J. Hila Community Service Award in 2009.

He was also Past President of the Carteret Lone Star Social & Athletic Club (Chrome Section of town) and received their recognition for a “Job Well Done” 1975 – 1979. During WWII he served in the US Coast Guard and was a member of the VFW Post 2314 and American Legion. Heartfelt gratitude to Frank Stellato for great hair cuts at home and to Charlie’s caregivers – Dorothy, Ziggy & Andy – for their dedication to his daily care given with lots of love.

Funeral services will begin at 8:45 am Saturday February 2, 2019 from Chubenko Funeral Home 625 Port Reading Avenue, Port Reading followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10 am at St. Joseph R.C. Church in Carteret. Entombment will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be Friday February 1, 2019 from 4pm to 8pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Carteret Honorary PBA Local 47 or VFW Post 2314, 289 Pershing Ave Carteret NJ 07008 in memory of Charlie.
