Charles Richard Chatlin June 6, 1942 – November 4, 2018 Charles Richard Chatlin, 76, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018 at McKay Dee Hospital following an unexpected illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilyn, and their children Kim Fry (Dev); Dana Chatlin; Stacy Rogers (Lance): and Shae Chatlin. His grandchildren include Logan Rogers (deceased); Kipp Rogers (Melissa and their children Liam and Nash); Dane Rogers; and Mira Chatlin.
Charlie, as he was known by family and friends, was the third child of Edward Albert Chatlin and Elnora Thompson. His siblings include Eugene Chatlin (deceased); Edward Chatlin, Jr.; James Chatlin; Gary Chatlin; Deborah Stout; Aleene Chatlin (deceased) and Michael Chatlin. A graduate of Ben Lomond High School, Charlie made lifelong friends and was a standout basketball player known for his exceptional rebounding skills.
He put himself through college while working nights at the United States Postal Service and raising a family. After graduating from Weber State University, Charlie became a high school biology teacher. He left teaching to pursue a career with the federal government and service to his country as a member of the United States Air Force Reserves where he achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.
Charlie traveled the world with his Reserve Unit building shelters, wells and other structures for those in need. When not “Reserving,” Charlie worked as a Systems Analyst at Hill Air Force Base and then the Defense Depot of Ogden. After 30 years of service, he retired from his federal and military careers.
Charlie was a humble and gentle soul. He was affected deeply when his first granddaughter, Logan, passed away. In the ten years since, he visited her grave daily.
It’s no wonder that Charlie was held in high esteem by anyone who met him. Even in his final days, while in pain and not aware of his surroundings, his sense of humor was present and he managed to bring smiles through the tears. Caring and providing for his family was keenly important to Charlie.
He loved doting on his wife and completing his regular list of “honey-dos”. He and Marilyn took great joy in creating a beautiful yard full of flowers with interesting details resulting in many neighbors and strangers stopping by to admire their work. Another joy they shared was spending winters in Hawaii- a tradition they held for more than 20 years resulting in many friendships across the country.
He loved golf, playing many years in leagues and passing his love of the game to his children and grandchildren. Sunday family golf outings became a regular pastime. A teacher at heart, Charlie relished spending time with his grandchildren helping expand their knowledge of history, travels, books and life in general.
He was happiest with a grandchild on his lap reading books together, playing/watching golf or working in his yard. He also enjoyed a good cheeseburger and a cold beer. Marilyn and the family will receive visitors on Friday, November 9th from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W 5600 S. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow at the West Haven Cemetery, 1550 South 2350 West.
