Obituary of Cheryl Smith CHERYL A. SMITH Latham – After a courageous battle with cancer, Cheryl A. Smith, 66, of Latham, NY passed away peacefully on June 20, 2018 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peters with her loving family at her side. Born on April 10, 1952, in Little Falls, NY she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Jane (Donovan) Franko. Cheryl married Michael T. Smith on August 17, 1975, and cherished a loving union of almost 43 years prior to her passing.
In addition to her beloved husband, Cheryl is survived by her children Cory (Katherine) Smith and Erika (T.J.) Lieberman, her siblings Linda Lee (Mike) Lephart, Gary B. (Kathleen) Franko, Scott J. (Eileen) Franko, and her sisters-in-law Colleen (the late Robert) Place, Cindy (Kevin) Dennin, and Paula (Frank) Stopera. She also leaves behind her cherished grandsons, Lucas, Kyle, Logan and Brody as well as several nieces and nephews. Cheryl was a Teacher at Holy Spirit School for four years, a Math Teacher at Cohoes Middle School for five years, a Reading Specialist at Abraham Lansing Elementary School for twenty-five years, and a certified National Wilson Reading System Trainer for over ten years, whereby she devoted her time and dedication to teaching young children how to read.
Cheryl was an avid runner, participating in many 5K races in the Capital Region. She truly loved gardening, her social lunch and dinner groups and playing golf with her golf buddies at the Edison Club. Her favorite pastimes were boating, water skiing and paddle boarding and taking trips to Lake George, Maine, and the Caribbean.
Most of all, she treasured her family and four grandsons, who will always remember her as their loving Mimi. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday June 22, 2018 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, 149 Old Loudon Road, Latham, NY. Cheryl’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday June 23 at 10:00 am at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Road, Latham with Fr.
Geoffrey Burke and Fr. John Tallman officiating. Interment will take place in Memory Gardens, Colonie.
