Claudius Columbus “Claude” Elmore, Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Carroll Hospital Center. Born June 30, 1934 in Herndon, VA, he was the son of the late Claudius and Vincie Eveline (Spencer) Elmore, Sr He was the devoted husband of Barbara (Baker) Elmore and was previously married to the late Ruth (Bosley) Elmore.

Claude was a graduate of Sparks High School, now Hereford High School, class of ‘52. He attended the University of Delaware prior to a long career relating to the field of engineering. He worked at the Friez division of the Bendix Aviation Corp, the Glenn L. Martin Co, Black & Decker Manufacturing Co., and Telemecanique and former companies.

While his expertise was in structural engineering and associated standards, his late career was as an independent industry consultant for ISO 9000 Quality Assurance certification programs. Outside interests throughout his life included coaching for youth recreation council baseball and basketball, Scout leader, Secretary/Treasurer of Optimist Club, Carroll County Lutheran Brotherhood, President of the Taneytown Lions Club, and President and various other positions in the Sparks-Hereford Alumni Association. Claude always enjoyed carpentry and other woodworking, furniture repair, “fixing things”, and playing golf.

Surviving, in addition to his wife Barbara, are son Claudius C. Elmore III (Joni) of Parkville, MD; daughter, Lisa Elmore Johnson (Mark) of Parkton, MD; step-sons, Jeff Devilbiss (Jen Hedrick) of Hanover, PA and Brian Devilbiss (Leah Bowers) of Gettysburg, PA; brothers, John Elmore (Peggy) of Freeland, MD and Spencer Elmore of Bel Air, MD; sister, Betty Sue Foell of Bel Air, MD; grandchildren, James Elmore of Timonium, Angela Johnson of Olympia, WA, and Aaron Johnson (Eleni Giorgos) of Baltimore; step-grandchildren, Rachel, Rebecca and William Devilbiss; and great-granddaughter, Norah Wren Giorgos-Johnson. He was predeceased by a brother Hershel Elmore. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 21787, with Pastor Cristopher Frigm officiating.

Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, February 25th at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Claude’s name may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address or to the Hereford-Sparks Alumni Association (Scholarship Fund), P. O. Box 171, Monkton, MD 21111.
