He was the son of the late Rebecca Mack Kirkland and was born on June 30, 1944 in Darlington, South Carolina. He enjoyed singing and doing yard work.

He was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed working on cars as well as traveling and sightseeing. He also enjoyed being around his grandkids.

He attended public schools in Florence-Darlington, South Carolina. He leaves to cherish his memory, his children: Dwight Kirkland Sr. (Tymesha) of Elon and Wanda Rebecca Jones of Darlington, SC; one brother: Robert L. Kirkland (Addie Jean) of Ann Arbor, MI; two sisters: Calperta Kirland of Lamar, SC and Edna Mae Robinson of Florence, SC; three grand children, and a host of relatives, family and friends.
