Obituary of C. Nelson Mike Nelson, 70, Lafayette, went to be with the Lord at 1:50 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018, at St. Anthony Healthcare in Lafayette. He was born in Marion on January 9, 1948, to the late Claude Thomas and Lydia Irene (Shockey) Nelson. Mike was a 1966 graduate of Mississinewa High School.

He served the Navy onboard the USS Intrepid during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he worked at Owens-Illinois and then at Marion General Hospital, where he worked in Plant Operations. He retired in 2006.

Mike was a life member and past commander of the VFW, as well as a member and Deacon of First Christian Church in Gas City, where he faithfully served as an Adult Sunday School teacher for over 30 years. Some of his favorite hobbies were spending time in Florida, camping, fishing, and gardening, especially tomatoes. In his younger years, he enjoyed golfing.

Most of all, though, Mike loved his family and friends and spending time with them as much as possible. He will be missed by his sons, Christopher Michael (Sarah) Nelson, Lafayette, and Gary Wayne (Ray Hopkins) Nelson, Indianapolis; grandchildren, Alex Dangelmajer, Kaylin Starr, Gregory “Mick” Gadd, Lydia Nelson, and Carter Nelson; great-granddaughter, Audrianna Joyce Starr; siblings, Nancy (Terry) Lamb, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Cindy (Ken) Goodwin, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Inez Clark, Candler, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Patty Jo Nelson; former wife, Judith Ann Nelson-Walsh; and daughter, Carrie Louise Adamson.

The family will receive visitors from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN. Services to celebrate Mike’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at First Christian Church, 401 E. N. D St., Gas City, IN, with Pastor Dave Shephard officiating. Burial will follow at Estates of Serenity.
