Constance’s Obituary Constance Wolf Fowlkes died at home May 9, surrounded by her three sons and two dogs. She lived in Bangor, PA for 18 years, where she tended to her many animals, produced goat, sheep, and cow dairy products, and was an active board member and participant at the Totts Gap Arts Institute. She died just less than two months after being diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer.
Born in Baltimore, MD to George V. Wolf and Alice K Wolf, Constance grew up in the Guilford neighborhood of Baltimore before attending Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, graduating in 1964 with a degree in drama. After college, she married Frank Fowlkes and moved to New York City and then to Washington, DC, where she went on to get her MA in English literature at Georgetown University with a particular focus on Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf. She later returned to Georgetown as an adjunct literature professor and brought performance to her poetry classes.
Raising 3 children in Washington, Constance went back to school to pursue her original passion and got her MFA in theater at Catholic University. Her theater career included productions at Washington’s Arena Stage, The Source, Woolly Mammoth and The Studio Theatre, as well as summer stock at The Wye Mills Theater in Wye, MD. She also shared her passion for performance through her teaching—with both high school students at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart and professional litigators with On Trial Associates.
In 1993 she married Don Lennox, whom she divorced in 1996. A growing interest in animals took her to several small farms outside Washington before she moved to the Bangor area in 2001. Her farm, which she shared with her three sons, brought people together from across the community.
She had a great passion for her animals, and for the dairy, the fiber and the companionship they provided. Among her other joys were her family, singing in the church choir and her various creative projects—including a play about PTSD, a novel about St Louis in the 1840s, and, in recent years, a modern dance based on the epic poem Beowulf. Constance is survived by brothers Van and Tim; children Dudley, Pac and VW; grandchildren Frankie, Mary Rives, Paschal, James, Edmund, Jacob and Ben; and border collies Bob and Billy.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, June 1st at the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain, 106 Church Lane, Delaware Water Gap, PA. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Gaffney Parsons Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. ” Village of Johnsonville”, Bangor, PA. Online condolences may be offered at gaffneyparsons.com In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Totts Gap Arts Institute and their commitment to celebrating the arts and arts education in the local community.
