Funeral Services for D. Douglas “Doug” Dudley, 90, Norfolk, will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 27, 2018 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Norfolk. Reverend Jackie Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday at Home for Funerals Chapel, 708 Georgia Avenue. Mr. Dudley passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk. Doug was born in Norfolk, Nebraska on July 15, 1928 to Darrel and Joanna (Roberts) Dudley.
He graduated from Norfolk High School in 1946 after attending McDonogh Military Academy and Western High School in Virginia while his father served in the United States Army. He attended the University of Nebraska from 1946-51 where he majored in Engineering. He married Virginia “Ginge” Scherer, December 22, 1951 in Stanton, Nebraska.
Doug was a dedicated father to his two children, Brad Douglas Dudley and Kristi Jo Scheer. He was a beloved Granddad to his five grandchildren: Keeli (Mike) Vrbicky, Rachel (Aaron) Hoffman, John (Kendra) Scheer, Tori Dudley (fiancè David McInnis) and Chase Dudley. He was also blessed with 7 great grandchildren who fondly called him ”GG”.
Upon graduation, Doug joined the family business of Dudley Laundry Co. and Servall Towel and Linen. During those years, he was active in Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Red Coat Ambassadors, Norfolk Building and Loan, Tom Brown Inc. of Midland Texas, Norfolk Country Club and University Club. Doug was baptized in the First Congregational Church in Norfolk and remained a long-time member for 77 years and served on many boards.
Doug and Ginge spent many winter months in their California home where he could pursue his love of golf. He was a popular member of the Lakes Country Club, picking and sharing the local grapefruit with his many friends. He truly loved his “Snap” and they enjoyed traveling around the world.
He loved his home and enjoyed sharing it with family and friends. Doug was a quiet individual but always ready to help a young person receive an education or a friend developing a new business. Doug is survived by his wife, Ginge, son, Brad (Polly), Daughter Kris (Jim), 5 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, brother George, sisters-in-law Joy (Ron) Denney Colsden and Alice Dudley, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials requested to the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Norfolk, the Norfolk YMCA, or the Norfolk Public Schools Foundation. There’s still time to send flowers to the Visitation at the Home for Funerals Chapel from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on December 26, 2018.
