September 17, 2018 David P. Mertzic ATHOL- David Paul Mertzic, 64, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, with family by his side. He was born in Ware to Paul Peter Mertzic and Maria Ann Cirelli. He grew up in Barre where he was known for his love of performing acoustic guitar and vocals.

He was a 1972 graduate of Quabbin Regional High School and later attended Worcester State University where he studied music education. Music and guitar playing remained a passion throughout his lifetime. After leaving Barre, he resided in Athol and worked as a food service salesman for more than three decades where he established many professional relationships that developed into lifelong friendships.

David may be best known for his dry, sarcastic humor, outspoken monotone voice, eclectic use of pocket knives, and above all his love and commitment to his family. He especially found joy in his many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his mother in 2003, his father in 2002, and his only sister, Cindy (David) Makara of Leicester, in 2009.

David is survived by his first wife, Kimberly Willhite of Athol and their three children, Ryan Mertzic and his wife, Latarsha, of New Jersey, Benjamin Mertzic and his wife, Erin, of Jaffrey, NH and Samantha Dunn and her significant other, Ron Hamlett, of Orange; also, his second wife, Cindy Atkins of Vermont and their daughter, Isabella Mertzic of Athol. David leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Jackie (Iggy), Noah, Jasmine, Justin, Samuel, Jaxon, Quinn, Vivienne, Rhys, Christina and Mckaylan; two great grandchildren, Micah and Sophia; a brother in law; a niece and her husband; as well as his companion Judy Itsvan of Hubbardston whom he enjoyed spending his time with, and her daughter Gabrielle. He will be greatly missed by his family and their time with him will be forever cherished.

A calling hour will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 6-7 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241-7005.
