October 19, 2018 Robert J. Dyer ORANGE- Robert J. “Bob” Dyer, 89, of Grove Street, died peacefully on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol with his loving wife at his side. Born in Montague on January 20, 1929, he was a son of Lillian P. Dyer and grew up in Athol and graduated from Athol High School with the class of 1947. On February 28, 1951, Bob enlisted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany as a medic.

He attained the rank of Corporal and was honorably discharged on February 20, 1953. On November 30, 1963, Bob married Margaret (Carey) at Saint Mary’s Church in Orange with Fr. Howard McCormick officiating, and have enjoyed over 54 years together.

Employed by the L. S. Starrett Company as a toolmaker, he retired in 1994. He previously had worked for the N.D. Cass Company and the J.F. McElwain Shoe Company, both of Athol. Bob was a member of the Athol American Legion Post 102, the former Athol-Orange Elks Lodge #1837, the Starrett 25 Year Club, Saint Mary’s Church and the Orange Knights of Columbus.

Bob use to play softball as a pitcher and was on the Maroni’s Café, Royale Café and the Napoleon Club of Gardner teams. Bob was also an avid bowler and played at the former Star Alleys in Athol and French King Bowling in Erving. Bob enjoyed sports, especially the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, and use to enjoy golfing, dancing, playing cards and cribbage as well as crossword puzzles.

Bob enjoyed gatherings with family and friends, and loved animals, especially cats including his “Oreo”, “Sylvester”, and “Nugget”. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Dyer of Orange; as well as several nephews, nieces and cousins. There are no calling hours.

A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, with Fr. Shaun O’Connor officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, will follow at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Saint Mary’Church, 19 Congress Street, Orange, MA 01364, or to the Town of Athol, memo- North Quabbin Animal Shelter, Robert Dyer, c/o Athol Police Department, 280 Exchange Street, Athol, MA 01331.
