October 19, 2018 Millard W. Chase Jr. ATHOL- Millard W Chase Jr., 81, formerly of Warwick, passed away Thursday, October 18, 2018, at home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born April 16, 1937 in Gardner Hospital to Millard W Chase Sr. and Winnie (Anderson) Chase and grew up in Royalston, MA. He met his wife, Joyce (Mebius) in the Navy in 1962, and the couple were married on June 29, 1963.
They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before Joyce passed away in 2016. Millard and Joyce had two children, Millard III and Nancy. Millard spent 20 and ½ years in the U.S. Navy before he retired in 1976, moving back to Massachusetts after living in several different states throughout his military career.
The family settled in Athol and Millard then went to work as an inventory controller at Simplex, from which he retired in 1999. Millard and Joyce moved to Warwick where they spent the remainder of their days together. Even in retirement, he held a part-time job at Hannaford Supermarkets and loved creating joy in others.
Millard was very faithful to the church and was a member of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church upon his passing. Boy Scouts also played a large part in his life. He was the scoutmaster of Troop 18 and then Troop 8, both of Athol.
He loved the outdoors and especially adored birding with this family members. He had unending love for his grandchildren and enjoyed travelling the country with family every chance he got. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Joyce (Mebius) Chase, half-brother Ralph Greenwood and half-sister Brenda (Greenwood) Coe.
He leaves son Millard III and wife Jessica (of Athol), daughter Nancy Chase (of Gardner), sister Nancy (Chase) Laroche (of Gardner), sister Patricia (Greenwood) Masaitis (of Athol), brother Richard and wife Linda (of Baldwinville), James (JP) and wife Tammy (of Beulaville, NC), half-brother Allan Greenwood and wife Shirley (of Templeton), half-brother Ronald Greenwood and wife Gloria (of Leominster). Grandchildren: Sheldon Chase (of Gardner), Brandon Thomas (of Athol), Gage Wood (of Athol), and Karleigh Chase (of Athol). He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as cousins and friends throughout the Quabbin area.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Witty’s Funeral Home in Orange with Rev. Mark Bariloni of the Athol-Orange Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will follow in Silver Lake Cemetery, Athol. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Athol-Orange Baptist Church, corner of Church and Walnut Streets, Athol, MA 01331 or to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. Witty’s Funeral Home, 158 South Main Street, Orange, is directing the arrangements.
