Dewey Gordon Parlier was born in in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina on November 5, 1933 to Albert Otto Parlier and Minnie Lee Baity. He lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina most of his youth, but moved to Winston-Salem NC with his Uncle Garner Lee Parlier who raised Dewey due to his father Otto Parlier’s early death in life. Dewey helped his Uncle Garner tune piano’ until he decided to enter into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War.
After eight years and three enlistments in the United States Army, Dewey transferred his job skills to the United States Air Force where he served a variety of duty stations to include a tour in Vietnam, several TDY’s from Alaska to the Pacific Islands and finally back to Germany where he met the love of his life, Maria K Ermer. Dewey had met and married Maria in Germany while serving in the Army in September 1957. Dewey’s awards while serving in the Army and Air Force for 22 years are as follows: Combat Infantry Badge, Air Force Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, United Nations Korean Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Republic of Korean War Service Ribbon.
Dewey and Maria had five children and eventually moved back to his childhood home state of North Carolina where Dewey would buy a home near Tobaccoville, NC in 1973. Dewey lived there until his death. He was a disabled Veteran and before becoming disabled had worked in the electronics and communication industry.
Dewey loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and known for his strong work ethic. Above all, Dewey was best known for his fierce loyalty to family. Dewey and Maria’s devotion to family was evidenced by their commitment to help raise their grandchildren.
Dewey’s home church is in King, North Carolina at Jefferson Church of Christ. He was active in his church and helped to teach Sunday school, volunteered with the local Senior Citizen’s Community Center and loved to call Bingo at local restaurants and activity centers. He was awarded the Governors award for his volunteerism to the community.
Dewey Parlier was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Otto Parlier and Minnie Lee Parlier, and his sisters Jettie Ruth Anderson and Jewel Dean Rector. Dewey Gordon Parlier leaves behind his five children, James G Parlier, Patricia Ann Fulp, Barbara Parlier Williams, Heidi Lee Parlier and Paul Garner Parlier. He also leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Dewey also leaves behind his sister Betty Lou Parlier. Dewey was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, November 24,2018, at Jefferson Christian Church with Pastor Steve Cook officiating.
Burial will follow in the Jefferson Christian Church Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 12-2:00 p.m. prior to the service at Jefferson Christian Church.
