Obituary for Dianne Carlson Hughes (Carlson) Dateline – Kennebunk, Maine – Dianne Carlson Hughes 82 yrs. , a resident of Kennebunk died Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME. Dianne was born in Boston on February 14, 1936, the daughter of J. Stone and Dorothea (Ziegler Carlson, late of Kennebunk.

Her early years were lived in Needham, MA. She graduated from Needham High School in 1954, graduated from Endicott College, Beverly, MA in 1956 and Katherine Gibbs College, Boston in 1957. She married Robert Hughes in November 5, 1960.

In 1965, Her husband’s business took them from Needham, MA to Cape Elizabeth, ME and then to Brewer, ME before retiring to Kennebunk in 1988. As a Young girl Dianne Spent many summers at Goose Rock Beach, at their families’ summer home with her parents and brothers, until 1951. While in College, she worked as a waitress during the summer at the Seaside House, Kennebunk Beach.

Through the years, Dianne worked as a personal assistant to the NE Mgr. , of Kraft Foods, as well as in a law office, and a real estate business. The position that she was most proud of was working at the Kennebunkport White House Staff Office during George H.W. Bush’s presidency.

In 1971, Dianne and her husband Robert built a ski house at Sunday River and enjoyed decades of skiing. Dianne and Robert also traveled to Austria, Switzerland and Italy, where they skied the Alps. In recent years they have hung up their skis and enjoyed the winters sunshine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she became active on the board of directors as Secretary of the condominium.

Also, during their retirement years, Dianne and Robert formed a land development, D&R Leasing Co. operating in the Kennebunk/Arundel area. Dianne was predeceased by her parents, her younger brother Richard Carlson died in 1981 and her older brother Jack Carlson in 2007. She is survived by her husband Robert Hughes and her son John E. Hughes and his wife Violet all of Kennebunk, ME and a daughter Anne M. Hughes and her Partner Cynthia Jablonski of Kennebunk and Reading, MA and two grandchildren Sarah and Ben Hughes both of Kennebunk, ME.

Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM Thursday September 13, 2018 at the Holy Spirit Parish at St Martha’s Church, Portland Road Kennebunk. Private interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME. In lieu of Flowers memorial donation may be made to the Animal Welfare Society P.O. Box 43 West Kennebunk, Maine 04094 in Dianne’s memory.
