Obituary for Mr. Dick S. Brough WESTMORELAND – Mr. Dick S. Brough, age 64, passed away after a courageous battle on Friday, April 13, 2018 in the comfort of his home with his loving family beside him. Born in Utica on April 25, 1953, Dick was the son of Carolyn (Gotte) Brough and the late Robert Donald Brough, Sr. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of T.R. Proctor High School/Class of 1972. He shared in a blessed union of 17 years with Barbara (Effland) Madore.
Their concern and compatibility with one another was bonded by love. Dick was employed by Kunkel Ambulance as an EMT until he could no longer work. He was a compassionate and loving man in his work as an emergency caregiver and in his home as a patriarch.
He enjoyed life, loved to laugh, and strived to be happy. He was blessed with a loving wife who was his best friend and children who were the light of his life. He also knew the joy and pride of being a “Papa” to his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A musician forever, his forte was the accordion. He performed at parties and events with fellow musicians and was a regular at Moose Lodges. His family camp at Hinckley Lake was his happy place.
He would sit outside his cabin with a cup of tea, and keep a watchful eye over three generations of kids! Their annual Hawaiian luau and the 4th of July celebration were his favorites. He loved his lakeside retreat and was happiest in the sunshine and serenity of the surroundings.
He knew the sport of fishing and was a master leatherworker creating custom pieces for family and friends. A ham radio operator, call name KB2TEL, Dick loved to listen to the radio and speak with many people in foreign countries, a pursuit and adventure he thoroughly enjoyed with his wife. He was also an accomplished and passionate photographer.
He willingly offered his services to family and friends, leaving them with the most gracious memories of their events. In looking back on his life, Dick was guided by his moral compass and his desire to be a good man. Dick is survived by his wife, Barb; his mother, Carolyn; his children and their loves, Jason and Amanda Brough, Lori Wood, and his late son-in-law James Wood who passed away on March 14, 2018, Frank “Paco” Brough, and Chad Brough and fiancée Hannah McGregor; his wife’s children who adored him as a dad, Daniel and Katie Madore, Derick Madore, and Jason and Vanessa Madore; grandchildren, Shalynn and Nick, Joslyn, Samantha and fiancé Kevin, Cheyanne, Christina, Deanna, and Cameron; Frank Salvatore II; Colin; Shelby, Madelynne, Guinevere, Dakota, Derick Jr., and Eyick; Nathan, and Aubree; and great-grandchildren, Joshua and Cade.
He also leaves his mirror-image twin brother David and his wife Sheila Brough; and his sister, Gina Brough. He held close to his heart was the memory of his brother Robert D. “Bobby” Brough, Jr. who passed away in 2010. He will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins; mother-in-law, Joan Effland and her late husband William; in-laws, Michael Effland and Megan, and Elizabeth; and friends, Bill and Sue, Tammy, Terry, George, Paul and Sandy, and Shelly, good solid friends who were like family to Dick.
He was predeceased by his infant sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Mary Frances. The family extends sincere appreciation to the staff of the Upstate Medical Center, Infectious Disease and ENT Departments, and the Regional Cancer Center for their compassionate care; Dr. Merima Ramovic and Dr. Andrea Finocchiaro, amazing women with wonderful care teams that were of great support; and the personnel of Hospice & Palliative Care who supported Dick and his family through his final journey. The family honored and commemorated Dick’s life at a private time.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Memorial gathering and Celebration of Life which will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2018 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. at the Westmoreland Fire House, 100 Station Road. All are welcome. Chaplin Anthony Fragapane will offer a final Blessing at 5:30.
