Don Joseph Mooney May 7, 1929 – December 26, 2018 Don Joseph Mooney, age 89, of Toledo and formerly of Erie, MI, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Merit House Care Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 7, 1929 in Cygnet, OH to Joseph J. and Ruth (Carver) Mooney. A highly decorated US Marine Corps Veteran of the Korean War, Don received a Purple Heart and a Korea Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars among others.

Don attended DeVilbiss and Macomber High Schools and Miami University. He was employed by Prestolite for over 19 years where he worked in quality control. He and his wife were owners of Pete’s Hot Dog in Oregon, OH and The Depot in Temperance, MI.

He retired permanently in 1991. Don was a member of the Lou Diamond Detachment 272 Marine Corps League in Toledo, OH, Past Commander of Conn Weissenberger Post #587 and Devil Dogs, and a member of the US Marine Corp League and the Purple Heart Association. He and his friend, General Walt Churchill, always wanted to help young veterans and so they started Young Marines group.

Don attended Washington Church in Toledo. A devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he will be greatly missed. Born: May 7, 1929 Death: December 26, 2018 Don is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn (Minder) Mooney, whom he married on November 12, 1955; daughters, Kim (Todd) Mooney and Teri (Tim) Vapenik; son, Don J. Mooney II; and one living sister; 3 grandchildren, Kristin Stout, Michelle (Keith) Zoeller, Bradley Kalucki; and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, “Jack” Mooney. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, December 30, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114 E. Alexis Rd. where Conn Weissenberger Post 587 will conduct a military service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also take place at Washington Church, 3925 Central Ave.

, Toledo, on December 31 from 9 to 10 a.m. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. with Rev. Don Fothergill presiding. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.

Memorial donations can be given to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
