CHAPIN – Donald E. Chapin, 86, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2018. He was the loving husband of Ilse (Boeckle) Chapin for 62 years. Born February 9, 1932 in Winsted; the son of the late George H. and Ruth (Gladding) Chapin.

Don was a graduate of Gilbert High School in Winsted and University of Hartford, Ward School of Electronics. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany where he met the love of his life, Ilse. Don started his career at Bell Telephone Labs in NJ, Anderson… Read More » Laboratories in Bloomfield and then worked over 30 years at SNET in Hartford until his retirement in 1995.

He was a member of the Regional Refuse Board in Winsted. He loved to tinker with electronics and worked part time for several years at Bob’s Electric in Winsted. Donald loved to golf, and watch UCONN Women’s basketball, PGA Golf, and old movies.

He enjoyed attending car shows, going to Vermont for long weekends, periodic trips to see family in Germany, and taking lots of photos. He had a beloved group of life-long friends along with their spouses; Bob Dean, Frank Hall, Billy Aust, Don Stavnitzky, George Mangione, and several more. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George Chapin (Jean) of Torrington; daughter, Caren Chapin Barker of CA; grandchildren, Lisa Chapin (Tim Passaro) and Michael Chapin (Shelby Praleikas); sister-in-law Lilo Pinkard and many nieces and nephews.

A special note of thanks to Jon and Pam Stenman, Jennifer and Jeff Hodgkin and Brenda and Jim Reginatto for always including Donald in their family activities. He was predeceased by his siblings, Roderick Chapin, Nancy Wimble, Sylvia Kleis and Gladys Palozie. Graveside services will be private at Winchester Center Cemetery.
