Obituary for Donald O. Hoefling Donald O. Hoefling passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 at Solarbron Memory Care Unit, surrounded by his family. Don was born on June 27, 1933 in Evansville to the late Harold and Marie (Berger) Hoefling. He was a 1951 graduate of Mater Dei High School and served his country as a Basic Airman in the United States Navy until 1956, including a tour of the Mediterranean on the USS Intrepid and continued in the Naval Reserve until 1960.
Don started work at Mead Johnson & Company in 1956 as a Pressman, then worked on the “Extra Gang” followed by an assignment in the Exhibits Department, traveling the U.S. displaying infant nutritional products at conventions. He then was Manager of the Printing Department, finishing his 37-year career in Creative Services as Associate Manager of Print Production, retiring from Bristol Myers Squibb in 1993. During retirement, Don enjoyed a part-time job at Clearcrest Pines Golf Course.
Don was a devoted family man, married to Rita (Mayer) Hoefling for 62 years. They enjoyed a long retirement traveling, spending time with grandchildren, golfing with friends, and as members of the Knights of Columbus. They also volunteered at The Ronald McDonald House, The Little Sisters of the Poor and St Boniface Catholic Church.
They received the Brute Award in 2014 recognizing them as outstanding models of Christian fellowship. In addition to his wife Rita, Don is survived by two daughters, Tammy (Tom) Spahn and Amy (Mark) Schlachter and three sons, Dan (Laura) Hoefling, David (Dodi) Hoefling and Andy (Patty) Hoefling. Don was most proud of his sixteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
His surviving grandchildren include Matt (Krystle) Spahn, Sarah (Ryan) Beuligman, Andy (Jenna) Spahn, Ryan (Samantha) Hoefling, Brittany (Terry) Roudenbush, Austin Hoefling, Aaron Hoefling, Anna Hoefling, Abby Hoefling, Lauren Hoefling, Maggie (Eric) Weinzapfel, Jacob Hoefling, Drew Schlachter, Cara Schlachter and Audra Schlachter. In addition to his parents, Don is preceded in death by his brothers, Gene Hoefling and Harold “Snookie” Hoefling as well as Don’s angel grandchild Gwen Schlachter. Friends may visit the family from 2:00 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at Pierre Funeral Home at 2601 W. Franklin St. The visitation will begin with a prayer service at 2:00 PM.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on June 13, 2018 at St. Boniface Catholic Church with a showing at church starting at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joe cemetery. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Solarbron Memory Care Unit staff and the Deaconess VNA Hospice staff.
