Todd grew up in Mesa and was raised by his mother and step-father Fred Hartwig. He attended Mesa High School.

When younger, Todd suffered some physical injuries which plagued him most of his life. Even through years of intense pain, he will always be remembered as warm & friendly, giving, caring, and he always greeted you with a big hug. For many of his adult years he lived in the Payson & Pine areas of Arizona, owning his own business, Mountain Man Construction, which specialized in handyman services for realtors and others in the area.

He later moved back to Mesa where he continued his handyman services, as well as overseeing and managing apartments. He oftentimes worked with his cousin Larry Rawls who was in many ways, like a brother to Todd. Todd was preceded in death by his father, Harold Shumway, his loving grandparents, Marlow and Mary Kuehl, his aunt, Grayce Rawls and cousin, Jimmy Lewallen, who were all there to welcome him home when he arrived in heaven.

Those grateful for sharing his life and left to cherish his memory are his mother, Lois Jean Schaffer; step-father, Fred Hartwig; step-mother, Sharon Shumway; his special friend, Ruth Martinie; brothers, Kyle Hartwig, Michael Shumway and Frank Traylor; foster sister, Lori; his nieces, Tanisha and Sabrina Hartwig; and nephew, Christian Freeman, as well as numerous loving aunts, uncles, and cousins who will remember him fondly.
