Now, there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge will award to me on that day and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 On Sunday, September 2, 2018, Doris E. Cheatom was quietly and peacefully called from labor at Life Care Center of Grandview, Grandview, Missouri to her Heavenly home with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Doris, the eldest of seven children, was born on July 13, 1941 in Chickasaw County in Vardaman, Mississippi to the blessed union of the late Samuel and Bertha Mae Cousin. Born into a Christian and God-fearing family, she accepted Christ at a very early age and continued to be a faithful member until her health started to decline. Doris’ Church Involvement: As an active church member at Good Samaritan, Doris worked as a Director for the youth, sang in the Gospel Choir and had served as an Usher on the Usher Board before joining Good Samaritan.
Doris’ Educational Background: Doris received her formal schooling in the Madison County Public School system and graduated from Wes High School in Denmark, Tennessee on May 7, 1959. She also attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee as an Education Major. Doris’ Work History: In terms of Doris’ work history, she spent the early part of her professional career as a Nurse’s Aide and later the majority of her work history as a Para-Professional in the Kansas City, Kansas Pubis School District working with the special needs population.
After working with students in the school system, she transitioned to work with adults with special needs. It was to her delight to advocate for the special needs population. Doris’ work history extended approximately thirty-five years of active employment.
After her retirement, she worked another seven years as a Bus Monitor for the Kansas City Public Schools. Doris’ Family: Doris was married on July 4, 1991 to Johnnie W. Cheatom. Doris’ and Johnnie’s blended families consisted of six daughters.
They are: Sandy Jean Wilson (Vincent) of Grandview, Missouri, Debra Dancer (Wendell) of Raymore, Missouri, Chanel Cheatom, Yvonne Garner (Anthony) and Carol Ann Cheatom all of Kansas City, Missouri and Sherrie Cheatom of Las Vegas, Nevada. Their sons are: Tony VanDorn Brown of Kansas City, Kansas and Johnnie Cheatom, Jr. of San Diego, California. To this union, there are a total of thirteen grandchildren, biological grandchildren are: Brittany, Chantille, Alexandria, Victoria, and Vincent Charles.
Grandchildren by marriage are: Wendy, Wontae, Wendra, Travis, Jasimine, Reggie Tyreke and Anthony. There is a total of six great-grandchildren from this union. Biological great-grandchildren are: Anaysia and Kamil.
Great Grandchildren by marriage: Promise, Royal, King, and Sky. Other devoted family members she leaves to cherish her memories are as follows, sisters: Louise Ellison (Aaron) of Denmark, Tennessee, Jacqueline Carr of Kansas City, Kansas, Jean C. Allan (George) of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother, Dwight Dewayne Earl Cousin of Denmark, Tennessee. In addition, there are aunts, uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and a devoted church family who were all very special to her.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Glenda Rose Anderson and brother, Sammy Cousin, Jr. Funeral Service for Doris E. Cheatom will be held Saturday, September 8, 11:00 a.m. at Good Samaritan Baptist Church, 5337 Bellefontaine Avenue. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Interment, Chapel Hill Cemetery.
