Doris’ Obituary Doris Eleanor Johnson went home to her savior on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, following a brief illness. Doris was born in New Britain, CT on December 25, 1926 to Florence & Fridolph Johnson, the second of their three children. She grew up on Russwin Road and was confirmed in the Christian faith at Bethany Covenant Church in New Britain.

She graduated from New Britain High School in 1944 having been active in the musical life of the school. Following graduation, she attended The King’s College in New Castle, Delaware, completing those studies in 1948. She returned to New Britain and began 43 years of employment with Connecticut Light & Power Co (now EverSource).

There, her creative and dedicated work took place in executive suites and, ultimately, the corporate technical research library, which she managed. Doris was a consummate organizer, a critical thinker, and a relentless doer. Following her retirement in 1991, she moved from Berlin to Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts.

For ten joyous years there, she basked in the sun, sand, and surf of the Cape, always welcoming her nieces, nephews, their families, and other friends. Doris was a passionate gardener and flower arranger. She frequently tested new hobbies and crafts and it was never surprising to find a new creative effort gracing her artfully appointed home.

Her musical interests and gifts were many. She was an accomplished vocal soloist and loved many forms of gospel music. She played the piano with great flair.

Her cooking was legendary; why, she even daringly challenged the Christmas Eve Swedish-American status quo with a few new recipes that had never been tried before. Throughout her life and to the end, Doris had a quick wit and a radiant smile, a reflection of her wonderful sense of humor. But the deepest waters of Doris’s life were her Christian faith and consistent desire to see others experience God’s grace.

She spent many years in youth ministry, organized home bible studies, and mentored younger adults. Over the course of her life, she was active at Bethany Covenant Church, Calvary Temple, Calvary Fellowship, Wethersfield Evangelical Free Church, Calvary Chapel Cape Cod, and First Church of Christ in Wethersfield. To her, active meant making a difference, bearing fruit, being obedient.

To the end, she was that. Doris was predeceased by her parents, Florence and Fridolph Johnson, her two brothers, Burton and Paul, and her sister-in-law, Gertrude. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Karen R. Johnson, her seven nieces and nephews and their families: Wilma C. Johnson (John Short) of Vero Beach, FL, Burton P. Johnson (Janice) of Wethersfield, Peter E. Johnson of Berlin, Robin E. Magnusson (Michael) of Northfield, IL, Margot E. Johnson (Jeff) of Monson, MA, Ross M. Johnson (Darcy) of Glastonbury, and Eric N. Johnson (Anna) of Chester, many cousins, and dear friends.

A service celebrating her life and bearing witness to the resurrection will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 4:00 pm at the Events Center, Covenant Village of Cromwell, 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell, CT. Memorial contributions may be made to CRU, Samaritan’s Purse, or the Benevolent Care Fund of Covenant Village of Cromwell.
