Doris Hartley Powers, 77, of Kinston, NC, shed her earthly wings and gained her angel wings as she went to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC. She was born on January 5, 1941 in Kinston. She met the love of her life (Jimmie Powers) at Gardner Webb College in Boiling Springs and they were married for 56+ years.

She is predeceased by her mother Helen Taylor Jones; father Clem Hartley; brother Thomas Hartley; sister Jean Hartley Stroud; and in-laws Kinchen and Hester Powers. She is survived by her loving husband Jimmie; son Jamie Powers and wife Melissa of Louisburg; grandchildren Mary Michelle Powers, Roanoke, VA, Danielle Wagner, Shannon Powers and Anne Marie Powers of Louisburg; brother Donnie Hartley and wife Deanie of Kinston, sister-in-law, Rachel Powers Sholar of Maple Hill and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She was a proud alumna of the Baptist Children’s Home of NC (Kennedy Home) having lived there from 1948 to 1959. She was honored to become Emily Hardee Kennedy as part of Kennedy Home’s Centennial Celebration in 2014 and she was the recipient of the “Friends of Children” award in 2016 and had served as vice president of the alumni association. She was always very vocal about being eternally grateful for the Kennedy Home, the place where she accepted God as her Savior.

After graduating college, she was a fourth-grade teacher in Kinston for many years. After retiring, she continuously had former students tell her what a difference she made in their lives. Doris will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on in the many lives she enriched with her love and encouragement.

Doris was a faithful member of Spilman Memorial Baptist Church, Kinston where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Spilman Memorial Baptist Church. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Dan Cromer and David Leary officiating.

Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2018 at the Powers Family Cemetery in Maple Hill, NC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Kennedy Baptist Home, 2557 Cedar Dell Lane Kinston, NC 28504.
