Ms. Doris Irene Hanson, age 91, died Wednesday, January 23, 2019 in Grand Rapids. Doris was born June 22, 1927 to Charles and Gladys (Smith) Norton in Muskegon. Doris grew up and attended school in Muskegon.

She married George E. Hanson and spent the next 30 years as homemaker and mother to her five, very active children. She loved them all dearly and thanked God for his blessings. They filled her life.

As a single woman in 1984, Doris settled in Grand Ledge, MI and worked at Michigan State University in the psychology department. Upon retirement she worked for seven years as a part-time office manager for Ace Hardware in Grand Ledge. In 2004 she moved to Wyoming, MI to be closer to her children and began actively volunteering at Metro Hospital.

Doris was always at her best when she was of service to others. The ebb and flow of Doris’ life took her to Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Barcelona, Spain and Egypt. She loved the Near East, their culture and the people.

Doris deeply believed we are all one in God’s sight. She enjoyed reading about Ancient Egypt and ancient theology. Her favorite author was Naguib Mahfouz.

Doris is survived by her children, Steven (Theresa) Hanson of Ortonville, MI, George Eric Hanson of Wyoming, MI and Michael (Sandra) Hanson of Muskegon; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughters, Gail Tolar and Laura Rose; sons-in-law, Robert Tolar and Michael Rose; brother, Morris in 2003 and her brother, Lyle, in 2008. Her FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11 AM Monday, January 28, 2019, at the Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 with Rev.

John H. Brown officiating. VISITATION will be an hour prior to the service (10-11 AM). Memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice of Grand Rapids.
