He then went back to school and graduated from Iowa State University in 1990 in the top 3% of his graduating class.

He was a social worker with the State Department of Human Services in Des Moines until his retirement. Doug and Lin Schulz were married June 28, 2006 in Ankeny. Doug always said that Lin was a saint.

Doug was especially fond of camping in tents and was happiest in the early morning sunlight in Yellowstone National Park or at the Grand Canyon sitting on a picnic bench sipping a cup of coffee. He was a firm believer in family tradition, which will live on in his absence.

He loved all of his family and they all knew they were abundantly loved. Doug’s incredible work ethic, gentleness and sense of fairness will never be forgotten. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Eloise (Garrity) Hastie and his brother Gregory.
