Obituary for Dr. Edwin A. Hallsten Jr. Edwin Ansgar Hallsten Jr. passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018. Recently of Naples, Florida, Ed lived for almost thirty years in Roscoe, Illinois. He was born May 18, 1931 in Clear Lake, WI, the son of Ruth (née Gerdlund) and Edwin Ansgar Hallsten Sr. Ed retired as a clinical psychologist, a pastor, and a Lt.
Colonel (Chaplain) in USAR. He served in the Korean War. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College ( B.A., St. Peter, MN), North Park Theological Seminary (MDiv, Chicago, IL), and the University of Illinois (PhD, Urbana, IL).
He was the pastor of the following churches: Winthrop Covenant Church (Winthrop, MN), Portage Park Covenant Church (Chicago, IL), Church of the Master and Kirkwood Community Covenant Church (St. Louis, MO), 1st Covenant Church (St. Paul, MN). As a psychologist, he worked at the Research Hospital (Galesburg, IL), Adler Zone center (Urbana, IL), the Institute for Human Res (Executive Dir. , Livingston County, IL), Agape Counseling (Creve Coeur, MO) and Janet Wattles Center (Rockford, IL).
He also served as Associate Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling at North Park Theological Seminary (Chicago, IL) and as state chaplain for the State of Illinois National Guard. Throughout his life he served on many volunteer boards and committees. In his latter years of service, his work on alcoholism for the Alaskan Covenant Church and his opportunities to utilize his EMDR training were especially meaningful.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Patricia L. (née Tornquist) Hallsten; his beloved children, Dawn (Don Mateer) Hallsten of Rockford, IL, Brent (Terri) Hallsten of Wailuku, HI and Danielle (the late James) Eldridge of Naples, FL; daughter-in-law, Karen Hallsten of St. Louis; seventeen cherished grandchildren; 24 treasured great grandchildren and brother Karl Hallsten. He was preceded in death by his son Rand Hallsten, his son-in-law Steve Parks, one granddaughter, his parents, and his brother John Hallsten. A memorial service will be held after the first of the year in Rockford IL and burial with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
