Obituary for Dr. John W. Nelson Dr. John William Nelson, age 82, of Spartanburg, SC died Monday, November 5, 2018. Born October 8, 1936, in Adel, GA, he was the son of the late Homer William Nelson and Miami Paulk Nelson. Dr. Nelson graduated from Mercer University in 1957.
He was elected to Sigma Nu Honor Society and Blue Key. He attended the Medical College of Georgia from 1957 through 1961. He was a member of the Alpha Kappa Kappa Fraternity and elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
He interned at the Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL. Dr. Nelson completed his Pathology residency at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, FL, from 1963 through 1966. He was in the Army Medical Corps in Fort Knox, KY from 1966 through 1968.
Dr. Nelson specialized in Pathology and practiced in Valdosta, GA and Spartanburg, SC. He was a Fellow of the College of American Pathology and the American Society of Clinical Pathology. He was a partner with Pathology Associates and retired after being with the group for over 20 years.
He was predeceased by his son, John “Butch” Dresing Nelson of Valdosta, GA; wife, Sara Dresing Nelson of Charleston, SC; and sister, Sue Nelson Massey of Adel, GA. Survivors include, Annette Thomason Nelson, his wife of 27 years. He is also survived by children, Michael Henry “Nub” Nelson (Rena) of Valdosta, GA, Melanie Ann Gibbons (Petch) of Washington, D.C., Cynthia Gail Kennedy (Michael) of Petaluma, CA, Sara Elizabeth DeLuca (Don) of John’s Island, SC, and Tara Alea Atallah of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, William Angus Kennedy and Sarah Mae Kennedy of Petaluma, CA, John Wesley Nelson of Valdosta, GA, Sarah “Maggie” Magdalene Gibbons and John “Jack” Patrick Gibbons of Washington, D.C., Sara “Ellie” Eleanor DeLuca and Thomas Paul DeLuca of John’s Island, SC, Amelia Elizabeth Atallah of Spartanburg, SC; brother, Homer Sheridan Nelson (Kay) of Macon, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received 4:00-6:00 PM Thursday, November 8, 2018, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be private. In remembrance of Dr. Nelson, memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or any organization of one’s choice.
