Larson, 88, Fessenden, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the St. Aloisius Nursing Home in Harvey. Duane L. Larson, son of Lawrence and Madge (Fleming) Larson, was born July 1, 1930 in Wellsburg where he lived his first years. In 1941, the Larson family moved to Fessenden where Duane grew up and attended Fessenden Public School.

As a young man he worked for area farmers and also for the Soil Conservation Service planting trees. In March of 1951, Duane entered the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge in March of 1953, he began working as a Maintainer Operator for the Wells County Road Crew.

On September 2, 1955 Duane was united in marriage to Beverly Hibsch at Concordia Lutheran Church of rural Fessenden. They made their home in Fessenden since. In 1965 Duane was appointed Wells County Road Superintendent and held that position until his retirement in 1992.

Through the years, he received a number of awards including Superintendent of the Year for outstanding service from the Association of County Engineers and in 1991, the Excellence in County Government Award from the North Dakota Association of Counties. Following his career with Wells County, Duane worked for over 20 years with Nelson Funeral Home of Fessenden. Never being one to sit idle, Duane also worked for the Wells County Water Board, regulating water flow through the county and helped maintain the Wells County Fair Grounds for several years.

Duane was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Fessenden, the Frank Proisl American Legion Post #33 of Fessenden and the Harvey Eagles Club. He enjoyed deer hunting with his family, raising his gardens, tinkering for hours in his shop, and attending every sporting event he could. He was the ultimate Green Bay Packer fan.

Duane is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beverly; his daughter, Debbie (Lou) Simenson of Bismarck; grandchildren, Jaden (Shalee) Huntley, Jordan (Leighel) Huntley, Scott Simenson and Grace (J.R.) Kerzmann; 5 great-grandchildren, Camryn, Hadley, Kolter, Benson and an expected arrival in March; and 2 sisters, Jeanne Melby of Mandan and Betty (Gordon) Schimke of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Herbert, Marvin and Russell.
