Obituary for Earl Harlan Sampson Earl Harlan Sampson, born on December 14, 1924 in Terrill, Iowa and went to be with the Lord on May 6, 2018 at the age of 93 years. He grew up in a farming family in Iowa and was one of four children to the late Lester and Pauline Sampson. From there he left the farm and joined the Army Air Corp and served during WWII as a navigator on the B17.
After serving in the military, Earl moved to Austin, TX to further his education at the University of Texas, where he met and married Bea Herrington. Earl and Bea moved to Amarillo in 1953, were he owned and operated Sampson Insurance Agency and Sampson Mortgage Company for over 50 years. During his time in Amarillo he was very involved in Toastmasters and was a member of Khiva Shriners and was on the director’s staff.
He was chairman of the Burns Unit of the Galveston Shriners Hospital and often flew with the burned children from Amarillo to Galveston. Later in life, Earl moved to San Antonio and continued to operate Sampson Properties. During his time in San Antonio, he transferred to AL Zafar Shrine, was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of the Scottish Rite.
He enjoyed playing Bridge ever Monday night with his friends, Ball Room Dancing with his partner, Patricia Post and working with the Alamo Honor Flight, which he was a part of in 2013 to present. Earl continued to meet with his honor flight coffee group at Jims on Hillcrest and Hildebrand twice a month. He is survived by his daughter, Debi Stavenhagen and her husband Bob of Amarillo, TX; granddaughter, Whitney Wells and husband Reed of Amarillo, TX; brother, Wesley Sampson and wife Earldine of Toledo, Ohio; special friend, Patricia Post and her son Tim O’Keefe, three nieces, one nephew and their children, along with numerous friends.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. There will be a memorial service in Amarillo later this month. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Alamo Honor Flight or the Shriners Children’s Burn Unit.
