Obituary for Edgar Inselberg INSELBERG, DR. EDGAR of Kalamazoo Ed passed away on Friday afternoon, May 11, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. He was born on June 15, 1930 in Athens Greece, the son of Valentin and Louisa Inselberg.

Dr Inselberg came to the United Stated in 1948 to further his education from Greece having survived the Holocaust. He graduated magna cum laude in 1952 from Cornell University with a degree in agriculture. He then attended the University of Illinois-Champaign noted as the premier school for agronomy where received both a scholarship and assistantship for his masters and PhD.

Dr. Inselberg was fortunate to combine his passion for science and love of education through multiple academic endeavors, most notably as a Professor of Biology at Western University from which he retired. Ed (or Grandpy, as know by his grandchildren) was a loving husband, father and grandfather who devoted his time to his wife Rachel while traveling the world, attending and participating in synagogue functions, enjoying the arts, and joining as one on the dance floor. He had a passion for learning whether at a museum, reading a book, watching an educational TV show or DVD.

Ed’s zest for life was witnessed daily through his genuine interest in others and his always present sense of humor. He demonstrated a steadfast commitment to giving back to many local, national and international charities, most notably to Jewish, Israeli, children and animal charitable organizations. He is also known for always giving money to anyone on the street who asked, feeding the animals at his beloved home and saving any stray animal that came to his door.

He will be missed by all those fortunate to be touched by his love, laughter and generosity. Ed is at peace and shared that he had a wonderful life. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Rachel Inselberg; daughter: Louise (Inselberg) Jesse; devoted son-in-law: Jon Jesse; and two grandsons: Alexander and Jason and brother: Alfred (residing in Israel).

Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM on Sunday (today), May 13, at Jewish Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo. Rabbi Harvey Spivak will officiate. Memorial contributions in Ed’s name be directed to ASPCA or UJA Federations.
