Obituary of Eleanor Smith AIKEN, SC– Eleanor “Sister Baby” Townsend Powe Smith died April 24, 2018. Mrs. Smith was born in Bennettsville, SC on February 28, 1934 to the late Ione May Moore and James Milton Townsend. In addition to her parents, her husband, Harold Smith, Jr., her brother James Milton “Sonny” Townsend, and her sister Mary “Snooky” Townsend Williams preceded her in death.

She spent her youth in Bennettsville, graduating from Bennettsville High School. She attended one year at Columbia College in Columbia, SC. She worked at USC Aiken Bookstore and the ABBE (Aiken Barnwell Bamberg Edgefield) Regional Library System with outreach programs of story time for children and at nursing homes.

She also worked with the branch libraries’ Bookmobile. She often talked about how great it was living in a small town, going through 1st to 12th grade with all her friends, many of whom she stayed in contact with for more than 75 years. Her friends remember her as being a dependable and caring person.

Her great love was working with books, children, and the elderly. She was a big fan of all kinds of movies – at the theater and at home. The family would like to give a special thanks to Camellia Wing of NHC Health Care of North Augusta and Caris Healthcare of South Carolina for their loving and compassionate care of Eleanor.

She is survived by a sister-in-law – Frances Nicholson Townsend; her children – James Fred Powe, Jr. (Kathleen), Virginia “Ginger” Powe Robinson (Steve), Nancy Powe Franck (Mike), Judy Smith Sinish, Wanda Adkinson Smith; grandchildren – Eric James Franck, Sara Jones, Becca Sinish, Tamme Flynn Smith, Shelbe Smith, Angel Beck, Ronnie Adkinson, and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday, April 28th, 2018 in the George Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Dan Rummel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
