Elizabeth’s Obituary Elizabeth Irene Dail Ashley, 98, of 101 Morris Circle, Edenton, NC, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019, in her home. Born in Chowan County on October 1, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Luther Cleveland and Minnie Griffin Dail. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Perlie C. Ashley; by her brothers, Marvin, Raymond, and Robert Dail; and by her sisters, Virginia Dail Mangus and Evelyn Dail Brown.

Surviving are her children, P. Gene Ashley and wife, Gail, of San Antonio, TX, Jimmy D. Ashley and wife, Carolyn, of Edenton, Jack L. Ashley and wife, Susan, of Morehead City; and Linda J. Ashley of Edenton; and a brother, Asa B. Dail and wife, Beverly, of New Bern. Also surviving are her six grandchildren, Donna Ashley Rose, Jimmy D. Ashley, Jr. (Stacy), Jill Ashley Castro (Greg), Greg Ashley, Michael “Ike” Overton, Jr., and Elizabeth J. “Beth” Gonzalez (Chris). She was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, Luke and Lindsey Baughman; Hunter, Mason, Trent, and Emerald Ashley; Madison, Olivia, Sophie, and Naomi Castro; Taylor Overton; and Christopher and Ian Gonzalez.

Elizabeth was an active member of Edenton Baptist Church for over 65 years. During those years she taught Sunday School, was a GA Leader, and spent 35 years cooking meals and helping others prepare and serve meals for the congregation. She was the bookkeeper for the family business, Ashley Welding & Machine Company for many years, but is best remembered for her cakes, cookies, pies, meals, and wedding receptions.

Through the years she prepared meals for various civic organizations in Edenton including the BPW, the DAR, the Rotary Club, and the Lions Club. In appreciation for her many years of service to the Lions Club, the group made her an Honorary Member of their club. She always had a kind word and a “hug” for everyone, brightening the lives of all around her.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be officiated by her pastor, The Reverend David Brooks. A private burial will be held in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends are invited to join the family in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service, or all other times at her residence.
