Erna Matz Horning, age 101, passed from this earth on June 20, 2018. She was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, and friend. She lived a long, interesting, and adventurous life beginning in Bremerhaven, Germany on January 28, 1917.

She was born to Selma Schroeder and Karl Matz and had one sister, Hilda Matz. Erna was raised by her mother Selma and step-father, Gustav Glier who she adored. At the age of 17 she began working as a pricer in the fashion industry. Erna was known for her impeccable taste and style. Later she attended a business school and earned a business degree.

Erna married Hans Schmitz in 1939 while he was serving in the German Navy during WW2. They were happily married until his untimely death in 1947. She then went back into the professional world where she was very successful.

In 1954 she married an American diplomat, Ronald Dyches, enjoying a happy life traveling and living all over Europe. Erna and Ronald moved to America, living in Oklahoma where she received her US citizenship, then Morocco, then back to Salt Lake City, Utah. After Ronald’s untimely death in 1963, Erna married Vernon K Horning and remained happily married until he passed on January 15, 2008.

Erna and Vern had 43 happy years together. They loved to travel, camp, and generally live life to its fullest. Erna was an accomplished seamstress and marveled all those who knew her by her elegant and stylish grace.

She had an optimism and enthusiasm for life that was contagious to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, all three of her husbands, and her step-son, Robert Horning. She leaves behind a step-son, Richard, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and a nephew.

We are all better for having had Erna in our lives.
