Eugene F. “Gene” Iagnemma, 79, of West Vandergrift, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was a son of the late Eugenio and Maria (Palma) Iagnemma. Gene was born in West Vandergrift on January 13, 1939 and lived in West Vandergrift his entire life.

He was a 1956 graduate of Vandergrift High School, and received his bachelor’s degree in secondary education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his master’s degree in English and speech… Read More » at the University of Pittsburgh. Gene taught English and journalism classes for 35 years at Kiski Area High School, retiring in 1996. He was the sponsor of the school newspaper, The Kiskizette.

Gene served in the Army Reserves. He was very involved in preserving the history of Vandergrift. Gene co-founded the Victorian Vandergrift Museum and Historical Society and was very instrumental in saving and reviving the historic Casino Theater.

Gene was a dedicated promoter of the town that he loved. He was a lifetime member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, where he served as Church historian, parish council member, and lector. Gene was a member of the Church’s Men’s Club, as well as the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed reading, history, watching jeopardy, and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beth. Gene is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan (Cronauer) Iagnemma of West Vandergrift; children, Gene (Christina) Iagnemma of West Vandergrift; Linda (Jon) Akins of West Vandergrift; Sue Safranyos of Allegheny Township; four grandchildren, Julian, Gianna, and Brin Iagnemma, and Maria Safranyos.

Family and friends will be received Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. in the Brady-Curran Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc. 429 Franklin Ave. Vandergrift, PA. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 12 Noon in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church 303 Franklin Ave.

Vandergrift, PA with Father James Loew as celebrant. Everyone please meet at the church. Private entombment in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, PA.
