Obituary for Eunice Clara Highlander Eunice Clara (Meyer) Highlander of Edwardsville, Illinois passed away peacefully on Monday, December 17, 2018 at the age of 101. The youngest of Herman and Anna (Willaredt) Meyer’s five children, Eunice was born on June 2, 1917 in Granite City. She grew up on a farm in Sand Prairie, Illinois where she developed the qualities that would shape and guide the rest of her long life: love of family, emotional strength, and unwavering faith.

Eunice married the love of her life, Herbert Highlander (deceased), on June 8, 1937, and they moved to a farm just west of Edwardsville. There they raised their three children: Sherlyn, Ronald, and Myra and became active members of the Edwardsville community. Eunice was a member of the Eden Evangelical Church, and her volunteer work left an indelible mark on countless lives.

She taught Sunday school for over twenty years, served on the Eden Church Board of Education, was a youth sponsor, Stephen Minister, camp counselor and 4-H club leader, and served as the Chairman of the Prayer Minutemen for eleven years. Eunice was also a proud, longtime member and past president of Circle Number 6 of the Eden Women’s Guild. Yet, even with the long days that farming brought and the hours of volunteer work, Eunice always made time for her family.

In fact, she was happiest when she was hosting large family gatherings for birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions. She knew, and often remarked, that the secret to a long, happy life was held in the laughter and memories from those moments. Eunice was a devoted wife and loving sister, aunt, mother, grandmother & great-grandmother who will be sorely missed.

Not to leave anything to chance, she provided the following words to be included in her obituary, and after 101 years, we think she’s earned that right: “I enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing and crafts. I really had fun playing pinochle with family and friends. I dearly love my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Also, my many relatives. My happiest times were spent with them. I thank God for all of them and my long life, with all the blessings”.

~ Eunice In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband Herbert, her daughter and son-in-law Sherlyn and Paul Witt, and her son Ronald Highlander. Eunice is survived by her daughter Myra (Mike) Campbell, her daughter-in-law Shirley Highlander, her grandchildren Reid (Christie) Highlander, Grant (Bonnie) Highlander, Travis (Brooke) Campbell and Tara (Michael) Lotz, her ten great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law Lorraine Highlander, and countless other relatives and dear friends. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Weber and Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Eden Church with Reverend John Roberts officiating. Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.
