Evelyn was born to Frank Swiss and Sophie Budek Swiss in Chicago February 4, 1926, and orphaned at the age of 4. Evelyn and older brother Frank were raised by their Grandmother Amelia Budek, aunts and uncles on the farm in Pellston Michigan. She loved to pick berries, grapes, apples, cherries and peaches, and help on the farm.

Evelyn and Frank skied miles each way in the winter snow to go to school. Evelyn could drive the tractor and any stick shift truck. At 16 she went to Detroit in 1942 to weld truck bumpers as part of the “Greatest Generation”.

After the war she sold cosmetics at Pecks and met the love of her life, Thomas Arthur Herington. She enjoyed family time, boating, going into the woods, and she cooked fantastic old world family recipes. Together they owned and operated gas stations on Plainfield and Alpine for 35 years.

Evelyn was a crack shot with a 30-30 Winchester, and an accomplished deer hunter. They would have been married 70 years. Evelyn supported her church and was a very active contributor to conservative causes.

She was a great Patriot. She is survived by her three children Howard and Linda Kremer, Thomas and Mary Herington, and Edward and Cheryl Herington, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. She passed peacefully to go to her Lord.

Her memorial service will be held at St Jude’s Catholic Church on 1120 Four Mile Road NE, in Grand Rapids, at noon on Friday December 28, 2018 with a luncheon and family visitation to follow immediately. Final resting place is at Resurrection Cemetery, Wyoming MI.
