F. Winton Lackey, 86, of Glade Spring, Virginia and formerly of Marion, Ohio, passed away suddenly Thursday, July 5, 2018 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, Tennessee. He was born on June 13, 1932 in Appalachia, Virginia to the late Fred and Alice M. (Cubine) Lackey. A gifted athlete, he graduated from Pocahontas High School.

His affection for Emory and Henry ran deep; he was a member of Sigma Iota Fraternity, was inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame, and served on the Board of Trustees for 12 years. He was a generous supporter of Emory & Henry and a major contributor to the Brooks Field House and Football Facility in 2009, and he was awarded a Charter Citation by the college in 2000 for his and his wife’s generosity.

He began his career in sales with Twin City Container of Coloma, Mich. , moved on to Elkhart, Indiana with Boise Cascade, and in 1975 moved to Marion, Ohio to manage the Marion Boise Cascade Plant until 1979. He then founded Mid-Ohio Packaging and went on to form Eastern Ohio Packaging, Western Ohio Packaging, and Gemini Warehousing.

After a career of 34 years in the industry, he served as a consultant with the Swartz Group. Retiring in 2000 he moved to Abingdon, Virginia and Bonita Springs, Florida. A true community steward, he served on the Board of Directors for HMO, Marion Bank, MARCA, Marion Red Cross, Marion H.A.N.D.

, and Marion Can Do. He was also a member of the Private Industry Council JTPA with the Marion Rotary Club, Marion Elks Club, Container Club, MINT, Sigma Iota Fraternity, Gyro, Chilhowie and Epworth United Methodist Churches. He enjoyed golfing, making a hole-in-one, entertaining, football, and traveling.

Fun loving, both spiritual and courageous, he was tough as nails. Always the listener, with his charm, presence, and charisma, he easily lit up the room. The consummate flirt, he treasured time spent in Florida, traveling, but most of all spending time with his family, and especially his beloved wife.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 39 years: Donna Marie Fanelli; son Winton Craig (Jody) Lackey; daughters: Cheryl (Stephen) Roth, Lisa Rene Lackey, Christen (Mark) Hawthorne; step-daughter Jennifer Marie Fanelli; grandchildren: Jade Morgan Lackey, Winton Cole Lackey, Jack Cain Lackey, Winton Casey Roth, Justin Stephen (Deniz) Roth, Anna Kathryn Hawthorne, Philip Lawrence Hawthorne, Donna Jarvis, Marcus Jarvis; great-grandchildren: Easton Cole Lackey, Merritt Alexandra Harris, Ellie Vivienne Roth, Winton Oliver Roth. He was also preceded in death by grandson Travis Jarvis. Services celebrating the life of Winton Lackey will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2018 at the Emory Memorial Chapel of Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va.
