Franz Haas, 89, of Granger, Indiana, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the Center for Hospice Care in South Bend, IN. During the last nine years, while living at Village at Arborwood Senior Community in Granger, he enjoyed playing bingo and Skip-Bo card games, eating monthly birthday cake, and participating in other entertainment. Franz was born September 26, 1929 in Franzfeld, Yugoslavia, to the late Karl and Barbara (Armbuster) Haas.

On July 15, 1950 in Spittal, Austria, he married the former Anna Beck, who survives. On June 15, 1955, he brought his wife, Anna and three young children to America to start a new life for his family. He was a very proud man and took great pride that Anna was able to stay home to care for their six children.

Franz was employed at Reliable Dairy for many years and then retired from Mastics in South Bend, IN. He was a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed volunteering his time at Notre Dame events, assisting with the concession stand.

He also worked occasionally as a model. He was feature in several RV and boat companies’ brochures. Surviving are his wife, Anna Haas of Granger, IN; four daughters, Elizabeth (William) Noll of Edwardsburg, MI; Hildegard (James) Hanley of Granger; Linda (Kenneth) Haas-Yoder of Elkhart, IN and Marianne (Rick) Carl of Osceola, IN; two sons, Franz (Marlene) Haas, Jr., of Osceola, IN and Manfred (Eva) Haas of Arizona; twelve grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is a brother, Karl Haas and one sister Barbara Merkle, both in Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. Franz was always a happy and very polite gentleman who loved his family.

Sunday was a day to spend with family going to beaches, Potawatomi Zoo, Leeper Park, and visiting friends and grandparents. Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00pm on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Palmer Funeral Home – Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, Indiana 46635. Funeral services will be at 11:00am on Friday, December 14th at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 51490 Laurel Road, South Bend, IN, with additional visitation from 10:00-11:00am on Friday at the church prior to services.

Rev. Greg Fiechtner and Rev. Carl Bassett will officiate.

Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.
