Gary’s Obituary Our Superman moved on today, May 23, 2019. Gary Lee Klender passed away after a long hard fight, one he went at with gusto. Born on March 24, 1942 in Bay City, Michigan, Gary is to be remembered not only as a consummate family man and best “Papa” around, but also as a proud Veteran, U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, a skilled tradesman and an artist.
His passion for living life to the fullest saw him involved in everything from racing enduro on his favorite Bultaco motorcycle in his early adult years to teaching soap carving to over 4,000 children in his retirement, giving him instant status as “the soap carving guy” while a spectator at the high school football games. An avid hunter, he loved spending time outdoors at the “cabin” with all the boys. Gary had a genuine ability to meet and make friends with a complete stranger within minutes, and without a doubt they would leave knowing the story of his beloved handcarved “cane”.
Gary also carried a great affinity for all animals, feeding the backyard creatures and taking in strays when the need arose. He would have run a zoo if he had another life to live. Back in the day, the neighborhood kids knew “Mr. Klender” would be there to fix their bikes, build them a toolbox or teach them how to race motorcycles.
He is still remembered through those children, now as adults, who cherish the memories of being driven to school field trips and Girl Scout outings. Gary was actively involved as a member of the Tri City Woodcarvers Club, and was most proud of his work in maintaining the wooden horses on the carousel at the Saginaw Childrens Zoo. He retired after 34 years from Saginaw Steering Gear, and was a member of UAW local 699.
Predeceasing Gary are his parents Alva and Irene, his sisters Jackie and Bev and his brothers Roland and Warren. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Kathie (Martin) whom he married on November 7, 1964; his daughters Kim and Kiersten (Todd), grandsons Matthew and Jacob and step grandchildren Benjamin, Noah, Madison and Anthony; special cousin Shirley and niece Gwen, Uncle Pete and Auntie Sue, and many nieces and nephews. It should be noted that his extended family, especially his neighbors Bob and Tim, included countless good friends and co-workers with whom he shared numerous fun and interesting stories and memories.
Gary’s family would like to thank Covenant VNA Hospice, especially Neema, Janet, Kayla and Denise for their compassionate care. Also, the Covenant Infusion Center and Oncology Department, with special thanks to Dr. Tobin and her nurse Tricia, and the countless professionals who treated Gary not only medically but with kindness and dignity. At the request of Mr. Klender cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Officiating will be Rev. Fr. Robert J. Kelm.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00 pm. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Tri City Woodcarvers – children’s soap carving program, or the wishes of the family.
