George Arthur Thomas, 94, of Friendsville, MD, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Garrett Regional Medical Center, Oakland, MD. Born December 4, 1924, in Hopwood, PA and raised in Friendsville, he was the son of the late Cecil Thomas and Rubena (Lowdermilk) Thomas Humberson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Virginia Thomas; one grandson, David Scott Suda; five half-sisters, three step-sisters, two brothers, six half-brothers and two step-brothers.

In 1941, as part of the Greatest Generation, he joined the Army and went off to fight during WWII, where he ran tankards and heavy equipment. He then moved to Bristol, PA, where he worked for Robert Hawthorne Demolition Local 542, in Philadelphia, PA, for over 40 years as a heavy equipment operator. He retired back to Friendsville in 1986, where he was a member of the Blooming Rose United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge #651, Uniontown, PA for 58 years.

George worked hard his entire life. He was a man of integrity and generosity; always willing to lend a helping hand to others. He is survived by one daughter, Pamela (Thomas) Gooch and husband, Thomas; one son, Scott Arthur Thomas and wife, Karen Ann; five grandchildren, Ashley (Nick) Crawford, Amanda Thomas, April Thomas, Andrew Thomas and Brandalyn Gooch; seven great-grandchildren, Storm, Gemma, Thomas, Lilly, Summer, Bella and Jax; one sister, Virginia Pomplas and one brother, Ruben (Shirley) Humberson.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 943 Second Ave. , Friendsville, on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the Blooming Rose United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dana Umbel officiating.

Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services. Interment will be in the Sand Spring Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Sand Spring Cemetery, c/o Kimberly Friend, 256 Humberson Rd.
