George David “G.D.” Rea, Sgt Major (Ret), 84, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Veteran’s Home in Warrensburg, MO. George was born September 6, 1933 in Eldon, Missouri. He graduated from Eldon High School in 1951.

He married Dorothy Mae Hopkins in 1956 in Eldon, MO. They moved to Beloit, WI in 1957 and then to Kansas City, MO in 1959. George was employed by Pittman Manufacturing Company and Automatic Systems, Inc. George was drafted in the United States Army.

He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired as Command SGT Major of the 4077th Army Reserve Support Unit at Richards Gebaur in 1993 after 35 years of service. George was a member of the Boy Scouts. He went on to be a Cub Scout Pack Leader and a Boy Scout Troop Leader.

He was a member of the Over 50 and Over 60 Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League in Raytown, MO. George enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding, rock hunting, growing tomatoes and roses, and watching his granddaughters playing soccer, volleyball, softball and basketball. Preceded in death by his father, George Leonard Rea; his mother, Daisy Mae Horton; and his brothers: Walter Rea and Jeffrey Rea.

George is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mae Rea (Hopkins); two sons: David Rea and Patrick (Pat) Rea; one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia (Patty) and David Hess; and three granddaughters: Jansen, Alyssa, and Emily. He is also survived by his brother, Rusty Rea (Lori); sisters: Jody Bost (Jerry) and Linda Warner (David); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held on May 5, 2018 at Longview Funeral Home, 12700 S Raytown Rd, Kansas City, MO from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.

A graveside service and burial will be held at Eldon Cemetery in Eldon, Missouri on May 17th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Veteran’s Home, Warrensburg, MO and the Alzheimer’s Association in George’s name.
