George Richard “Dick” Telford October 12, 1928 ~ May 1, 2019 George Richard “Dick” Telford, 90, passed away on May 1, 2019 in Ogden, Utah following an extended battle with dementia. Dick was born October 12, 1928 to Sterlin Delano and Bernetta Bowden Telford in Ogden, Utah. Dick married his sweetheart, Doris Moore, on September 10, 1949 in Ogden, Utah where they lived the majority of their marriage.
To think, nearly 70 years ago, Dick looked across a crowded theater, spotted Doris in a beautiful pink dress her mother made and declared to a friend that he would marry “THAT girl”. Dick had a wonderful long life with Doris. Together, they raised three sons, Craig, Boyce, and Jay.
He worked at Hill Air Force Base as an aeronautics electrician and crew supervisor for several planes, including the F101, F4 and C5 Galaxy. He traveled all around the world on special assignments during his tenure and retired in 1976 after 30 years of service. Concurrently, he served in Utah Army National Guard where he was assigned to an artillery unit based in Ogden.
After retiring from Hill, he served in the Air Force Reserve where he was assigned to the Air Battle Damage Repair Unit. He retired again after 26 years of military service. Dick loved Westerns, cars, hunting, camping, fishing, birdwatching, and enjoying the great outdoors.
He, Doris, and Jay built a beautiful log home themselves in Alpine, Wyoming and he became the town judge for a few years before moving to Almy, Wyoming. They later relocated to Utah to be closer to family. He was happy, outgoing and made friends easily.
His sharp wit and great sense of humor were charming and there was never a shortage of interesting stories to tell. Dick was an avid Utah Jazz and Denver Broncos fan and religiously watched their games. Most of all, talking with and about those he loved made him smile and his eyes twinkle every time.
Dick is survived by his wife, Doris; sons, Craig (Sandra) of Parma, Idaho, Boyce (Nora) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jay (Kimberly) of Ogden and grandchildren, Zack (Trisha) of Caldwell, Idaho, Sunny of Parma, Idaho, Russell (Alena) of Draper, Benjamin (Mikel) of Vineyard, Daniel (Stacy) of Provo, Jayson (Allison) of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Devin of Idaho Falls, Idaho. He adored his great-grandchildren and enjoyed their visits. He dearly loved his “31 Group” comprised of lifelong friends, some from as far back as high school, who got together regularly to play cards.
His furry companions, Abbie and Fiona, are still not sure what to do without him. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elizabeth and Kathryn; brothers, Sterlin and Earl; and granddaughter, Emily Paige. Many thanks to all of the Visiting Angels who cared for George over the past several months at home and to the staff at Hidden Valley Assisted Living, Memory Care Unit.
We especially appreciate the care and guidance provided by Julie Lee and the Intermountain Hospice staff. There are so many who offered compassionate and tender care to George, Doris, and the family. We are forever grateful for your commitment to those you serve.
