George Maxville Cornett passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 10, 2018, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old. A Kentucky native, George was born on December 22, 1930 in Sassafras, Kentucky, the youngest of 11 children.

A lifelong learner, George attended Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky and was awarded a scholarship to the University of Kentucky where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture in 1955. Following college, George enlisted in the U.S. Army where he held the rank of Specialist First Class in the 1st guided missile battalion for active duty and reserves. George also played 1 1/2 seasons of minor league baseball for the Hazard Bombers, the farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Professionally, George worked as a consultant and technical director in the chemical division at Inmont/BASF Corporation for 39 years. He continued to take courses at colleges wherever he lived to support his love of learning. Following a short retirement in 1994, George returned to the work force and was employed by Kroger for 12 years.

A man of faith, George was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and over the years served as a CCD teacher, Eucharistic Minister, usher, greeter, volunteer at St. Vincent De Paul Society, participant in Community Spirit/Funeral Meals and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus fraternal organization. A devoted and loving family man, George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leonila “Nellie” Cornett (nee Alferez), daughters Yvette Cornett (of Chicago, IL) and Bernadette Cornett/Christopher Heberly (of Nashville, TN), sister Grace Singleton (of Georgetown, IN), many nieces, nephews, great and great-grand nieces and nephews along with many dear friends. The Cornett family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and therapists at Greenview TriStar Hospital, Lifeline Home Health Care and Hospice of Southern Kentucky for their endless compassion, support and care.

A celebration of life will take place at 5: 00 PM Wednesday November 14, 2018 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will take place beginning at 4:00 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alice Lloyd College.

Arrangements entrusted to J. C. Kirby and Son Lovers Lane Chapel.
