Dateline Ireland, IN Gerard “Gary” M. Schmitt, age 81, of Ireland, Indiana, passed away at 3:37 a.m. on Monday, May 28, 2019, at home. Gary was born in Ireland, Indiana, on February 28, 1938, to Edward and Justine (Renner) Schmitt. He married, the love of his life, Marlene Jahn, on June 17, 1967, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jasper, Indiana, who he was married to for 51 years.

He was 1956 graduate of Ireland High School. Gary was a United States Army Veteran. He was a mechanic at DT Auto Service and Larry’s Service Center in Ireland for over 40 years.

After retirement he worked for Schroering’s Plumbing and Heating. He was a very proud resident of Ireland, where he was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Ireland Sportsman Club, where he was a past director, the Ireland K of C, the Ireland Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, the IVFA District 18, American Legion Post #147, and a past member of the Ireland Lions Club. He umpired for many years for Ireland Youth Sports when his children were playing sports.

He was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching the Indiana Hoosiers, Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, St. Louis Cardinals, and his grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed playing cards, listening to music and attending country music shows. Surviving are his wife Marlene Schmitt, Ireland, IN, one daughter, Kendra (Max) Renner, Boone Twp.

, IN, four sons, Shawn (Marissa) Schmitt, Ireland, IN, Carey (Kim) Schmitt, Ireland, IN, Brad Schmitt, Ireland, IN, Chad (Ashley) Schmitt, Evansville, IN, and seven grandchildren. Preceding him in death are two sisters, Seraphia Schmitt and Bibiana Pipher, and three brothers, Edmund, Januarius, and James Schmitt. A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerard “Gary” M. Schmitt will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) on Friday, May 31, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ireland, Indiana, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The American Legion Post #147 will conduct military gravesite rites. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the service time at the church on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to a favorite charity.
