Gilbert Charles Phillip Joseph Hartson passed to his next great adventure on December 23rd after living with young onset Alzheimer’s Disease for the past 7 years. Gil was born in Magog, Quebec, Canada and came to the US when he was an infant. He was always proud of his Canadian heritage, even though he became a US citizen at the age of 9.
Gil married the love of his life, Susan Belt Hartson, 35 years ago. Together they shared a love of many things, especially the sun and sand. Gil had many hobbies and was known to fully research everything he did from brewing beer, picking out stereo equipment, and building his Santa Cruz bicycle component by component.
Gil could fix anything and his best handiwork can be seen in the house that he and Sue bought and renovated together. They were partners in the entire process with the exception of wallpapering. Music was an important part of Gil’s life.
He enjoyed live music, both local and international talent. Many memories of him included some aspect of music. Those memories vary for different people, but are present for most who knew Gil.
He enjoyed a good glass of scotch, while listening to different artists, while perfectly positioned in front of the speakers of his stereo system. For work, Gil dabbled in a couple of fields that included respiratory therapy, car sales, and education before he settled on the field of x-ray. He attended CCRI and did his field placement at St Joseph’s Hospital.
Upon graduation, Gil worked at both the Providence and Fatima units before becoming the manager of the Interventional Radiology Department at Fatima Hospital until his disease prevented him from working any longer. Gil was proud of his accomplishments at his chosen career and usually liked being the boss. “The Great Gilbert”, a name given to him by his nephews because of his exceptional pool playing abilities, will be remembered by all who knew him as opinioned, but kind.
He was liked by most, especially his elderly patients. Gil had the gift of gab and could talk to anyone about anything for hours on end. Think of Gil whenever you are on a beach, that was his favorite place to be, especially East Beach in Charlestown RI.
While you are there, have a beer in his memory something exotic, and toast to the exceptional gifts he brought to all who knew him. Calling hours will be at the Jones-Walton-Sheridan Funeral Home, 1895 Broad St., at Park Ave. , Cranston on Friday, December 28th from 5-7 pm.
His funeral will be at one of his favorite places, East Beach in Charlestown RI on Saturday, December 29th at 11 am.
