Glenn John Smith, age 77, of Sandusky, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. He was better known as “Capt. John” or “Smitty”.

He was born July 10, 1941, in Florida, to Clara G. Meggitt and Glenn E. Smith. He attended Margaretta High School, then went on to become a seaman merchant for the U.S. Coast Guard. Glenn worked for Ford Motor Company, Sandusky, retiring in 1994, and was a charter boat captain.

He owned and operated J & S Service on George St., Sandusky, where he restored vehicles and had a towing service. He was an active sponsor for the Humane Society of Erie County and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #50, since November 5, 1980, AMVETS, American Legion, VFW, and the Orioles. He was known for racing, going to car shows, and restoring old cars.

He is survived by his children Tammy Sue Smith Jones, Randy John Smith, and Shannon Glenn Smith; grandchildren Heather (Jones) Grieves, Kirk Jones, Bryce Fuerstenberg, and Joshua Smith; great grandchildren Elle Dunlap and Beckett Grieves. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Clara (Meggitt) Smith. Friends may call from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM Friday, July 27, 2018, at Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, 610 S. Washington St., Castalia, where services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, July 28, 2018.

A funeral procession will begin at 9:45 AM, Monday, July 30, 2018, at Ransom Funeral & Cremation Service, and will be going to Castalia Cemetery for the burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Erie County, 1911 Superior St., Sandusky, OH 44824.
