Gordon Lee Beil of Walton, KY passed away peacefully on April 9, 2018 in Cold Spring, KY at nearly 67 years of age due to health issues. Gordon was born on April 22, 1951 to Henry Lee Beil and Betty Jean Gulley Beil of Burlington, KY, both deceased. He graduated from Cumberland College with a math major and biology minor and completed his Masters in Education.
He began teaching math in 1973 at Conner Senior High School where he remained through retirement in 2004, continuing to substitute… Read More » teach for a total career of 31 years. Gordon was head of the school’s math department and had roles there as coach for boys’ golf, girls’ basketball, bowling league, and Men of Conner sponsor and football games videographer. Gordon married Sherry Hoskins in June 1993.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman, softball player, cook, and voracious mystery/thriller reader. He and Sherry enjoyed several fishing trips to Alaska, and vacation trips involving friends and golf. He was known affectionately to his friends as “Taco”, a college nickname, and “The Rudder” for his loyalty and steadfast support.
A lifetime achievement was a golfing birdie #18 at Pinehurst at #2 Hole, a known tough course and site of US Opens and Masters Tournaments. No one saw it as his golfing buddies were watching Michael Jordan tee off on Hole #1, however, the accomplishment remains. As a teacher, he brought his own style to his classes.
He instituted a Nickel Pencil Fund – students who came to class without a pen or pencil had to buy one. That money plus his own funded his after-school math tutoring pizza parties before big tests, open to all math students. Former students recall him as tough but fair, humorous, and several attributing “Tac” as their inspiration to become math teachers themselves or to pursue a STEM career.
Gordon is survived by his loving wife Sherry Hoskins Beil, brother William “Bill” Beil and wife Toni, sister Kathy Beil-Morgan and brother-in-law Randy, aunts and uncles Marilyn Feldhaus Beil and Margaret Beil Maurer (Robert), nieces Jen Beil, Lindsey Beil Wilder (John), and Whitney Beil Rollins (Charlie), great-nephews Matthew Wilder and Everett Moser, great-nieces Harper Rollins, Amira Moser and Emmiline Hoskins, Father/mother-in-law Merle and Kathryn Hoskins, Brother sister-in-law Greg and Laura Hoskins, and Nephew/niece-in-law Clint Hoskins (Kim), and Ginger Hoskins Moser. A time of fellowship and a meal will follow the burial at the Burlington Baptist Church Activities Center, 3031 Washington St., Burlington, KY 41005.
