“Granny” Jerri Hester January 07, 1929 – December 24, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card “Granny” Jerri Hester, 89, of McAlester, passed away in her home on Monday, December 24, 2018. The family will greet friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at the United Methodist Church of Pittsburg with Rev.
Jim Ray officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Pittsburg. Pallbearers will be Shawn Sisco, Michael Stone, Nabe Murdaugh, Cache Stone, Camden Stone, and Josh Wilkins.
Honorary pallbearers will be Todd Stone, Brent Stone, James Smith, Rhett Murdaugh, Ben Murdaugh, Kent Wilkins, Carl Hackler, Dr. Kenneth Miller, Kendall Carano, and the Shannon and Rowland families. Jerri was born on January 7, 1929 in Pleasant Valley, Oklahoma to Alexander “Alex” Otis and Celestia Virginia (Quick) Staples. She graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1947 and continued to earn her associate degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College.
Jerri attended Oklahoma A & M College, currently Oklahoma State University, earning her teaching certification in 1951. She later earned her master’s degree in special education. She taught school for 32 years at Kiowa, Pittsburg, and McAlester High School, retiring in 1984.
Jerri was a member of the Retired Teachers of Pittsburg County and United Methodist Church of Pittsburg. She was very faithful to her family, friends and church. She was always on the go.
She loved to spend time with her family visiting, especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She loved cooking for the holidays and Sunday dinners after church. She also enjoyed gardening, picking berries, and traveling.
Jerri is survived by her daughter: LaGina Carano and Cody Raleigh; grandson: Coalton Carano and Baleigh Drake; granddaughter: Harley Carano, all of McAlester, great-granddaughter: Marlowe Carano; great-great-nieces: Emily Caudill and Gracie Gensman. She is also survived by her brother-in-law: Bob Sisco of Pittsburg; sister-in-law: Jean Staples of McAlester; special friends: Margaret Gilmore, Fern Echelle, Amber Gann; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Donald Hester; brothers: Paul Staples and his wife, Isbell and Bill Staples; sisters: Juanita Blackwell, Mary Sisco, and LaRue Staples; great-niece: Carsyn Kay Hackler; nieces: Jan (Staples) Wilkins and Linita Hasselbach; and great-nephew: Dylan Willie.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Carsyn Kay Hackler Memorial Fund at the First Bank in Kiowa or the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Fund at the Bank NA.
