Obituary for Harriet F. Lorenz Harriet F. Lorenz, beloved wife of Denis M. Lorenz, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 24, 2018, at St Francis Hospital. The cause of her death was MDS, a form of Leukemia. Her family was with her constantly during her final two weeks.

Harriet was born January 29, 1929 in New York City to the late Ada and Meyer Fenster. In the 1930’s the family moved to Seymour, Connecticut and lived in a house on the Capolla farm. Harriet had many happy memories of those days living on the farm.

The family later moved to New Haven, Connecticut. Harriet graduated from Hillhouse High School. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Library in Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University.

While at Southern she played basketball on the varsity team. Harriet had been married earlier to Walter Edelmuth. Tragically, Walter died at a very young age, leaving Harriet and their infant son, Arthur.

She first met Denis when they were working together at the Library Neighborhood Center of the New Haven Free Public Library. They were married March 20, 1965, the first day of spring and it snowed. Over their 52 years of marriage, they were seldom apart, sharing their love of books and libraries, raising their children, hiking, camping, sailing, cruising, motoring on the Connecticut River and Long Island Sound, visiting New York to see the ballet, and, of course, being with their family.

When her children were old enough, Harriet commuted to New Haven and received her Master’s Degree in Library Science. During her career, in addition to the New Haven Free Public Library, she worked as a Children’s Librarian for the Bridgeport School System, and later the South Windsor Public Library. She retired as the Assistant Director of the Bristol Public Library.

In addition her husband, Harriet is survived by her son Sean Lorenz of Annandale, Virginia, his wife Ruby, and their children Zoe and Dean, by her daughter Alison Grover of Golden Valley, Minnesota, her husband Craig Grover and their children, Aksel and Anika, and by her son Arthur Lorenz of Berkeley, California and his wife Jayne Lee. She is also survived by her sister Mitzi Bargar of Hamden, Connecticut and her husband Marvin Bargar, and their children, grand children, and great grand children. The family wishes to thank all the staff at St. Francis Hospital, especially those in Oncology and the Cancer Center as well as all the staff at the Reservoir.

A private family gathering is planned to celebrate her life.
