Obituary for Mrs. Helen Giron Mrs. Helen B. Giron Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA, for Mrs. Helen B. Giron, 97, who entered eternal rest, Sunday, December 16, 2018 at her residence in Opelousas, LA. Interment will be in St. Landry Catholic Cemetery. Helen, along with her husband, graduated from St. Landry Parish Training School in 1940.
In 1944, she was a member of the first four-year graduating class of Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute know as Grambling State University where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. Later after giving birth to James and Rose, she spent summers in Houston, Texas, where she earned a Master of Science in Education from Texas Southern University in August 1955. Helen retired in June of 1976 after teaching for thirty one (31) years in the St. Landry Parish School System.
She was born with the gift of teaching and she truly loved her profession. Helen was especially dedicated to those children who needed the extra attention. She often went above and beyond the call of duty; she would bring her students home with her to spend time as a special treat, she ensured that her students had what they needed by helping provide them with school materials and by giving them rides including one of her students who rode home with her once a week to attend piano lessons.
Helen was an active fifty (50) year member, physically and/or financially, of the following organizations: Legion of Mary, Senior Sodality, Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary, Elks, and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Her other commitments included Eucharist Minister, Visitor of friends in the nursing homes, Holy Ghost School and Church and Parent Teacher Association. Helen, for ninety-seven blessed years, strived to live a life that reflected her heart of love for her Lord, her family and her community.
She now leaves an abundantly rich legacy of love, caring, sharing. Mrs. Giron is survived by her children, James Giron (Joan) of New Orleans, LA, Rosemary Walker (Irvin) of Lafayette, LA and Donald Edward Giron (Mona) of Opelousas, LA; seven grandchildren, Christina, Gabrielle, Tunicia, Ashton, Irvin, Mia and Dwight Batiste; six great grandchildren, Arielle, Chloe, Aliyah, Jasmine, Alexandra and Alani; three great-great grandchildren, Carter, Abrielle and Ava Grace; a brother, Wallace Boyance; two sisters-in-law, Helen P. Giron and Clydia Giron; Godchildren, Earl Boyance, Jr. (Barbara) and Wilbert Giron (Betty) and a host of relatives and friends. Mrs. Giron was preceded in death by her husband, Ashton Giron; her parents, Frank and Rosella Boyance; a sister, Rita Young; two brothers, Earl Boyance, Sr. and Frank Boyance, Jr. Visiting hours will be observed from 7:00 AM to 12:45 PM Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Williams Funeral Home.
