St. Albans – Henry J. Garceau a lifelong area resident passed away Friday, July 27, 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Swanton on March 14, 1939, he was the son of the late Gaston and Theresa (Gratton) Garceau. Henry was 79 years old.

On February 28, 1959, in St. Albans, he married Marlene Berger, who survives him. Upon his return to Vermont, he enlisted in the Vermont Army National Guard, receiving his honorable discharge in May of 1963.

He was a well know carpenter throughout this area, having started a construction career at Wright & Morrisey and then set out on his own- he’s built a portfolio that ranges across Franklin County and includes several local barns and his own home. To his family he was known as “Mr Fix-It” or “MacGyver” as he was always creatively working on projects. He enjoyed playing the accordion as much as his family loved hearing him play.

He was especially proud of his garden, collection of tractors and the time he spent with family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Marlene, of St. Albans; their son, Ricky Garceau; their daughters, Theresa Many and her husband, Allan, of Highgate, Laura Garceau and her significant other, Roger Sartwell, of Highgate, and Shellie Streeter and her husband, Timothy, of Fletcher. He also leaves grandchildren, Shain and Sarah Garceau, Jennifer Gordon, Arron and LeeAnn Many, Tausha Simmons and her husband Michael, David Garceau, Brandon, Ryan and Keegan Streeter; and 10 beautiful great grandchildren.

Henry is also survived by his brothers, Rene Garceau and his wife, Betty, Roland Garceau and Greg Garceau and his wife, Julie; his sister, LouAnn Reed and her husband, Roger and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Henry was predeceased by his son, Robie Garceau and sister, Pauline Austin and her husband, Ralph and sister in law, Judy Garceau. It was Henry’s wish that there be no services.
