Obituary for Henry J. “Hank” Culbert HENRY (HANK) J. CULBERT, SR. , age 99 of Oak Ridge, TN passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at his home. He was born, November 3, 1919 in New York City.

After graduating from Stuyvesant High School in New York City, he entered the University of Alabama and earned a degree in chemistry in 1941. Shortly after, Hank was hired by E.I. Dupont and moved to Louisville, KY. Then in March 1944 he accepted a position with Union Carbide as an analytical chemist at K-25 and later supervised (3) Process Control Laboratories.

With the advent of the nuclear power industry, he assumed the position of staff member in the operations division. In this capacity, Hank was the toll enrichment coordinator and the prime contact between Union Carbide and private industry. He was responsible for the uranium withdrawal, packaging, and shipping.

As a result of this activity, he was brought into contact with representatives from all major uranium processing companies, domestic and foreign, plus numerous federal agencies involved in these shipments. Hank worked at K-25 for more than 41 years. Hank had been a member of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management-Certified, American Institute of Chemists Fellow, B.P.O.E, Elks Lodge # 1684, NRA, Oak Ridge Sportsman’s Assoc.

, Past President of the University of Alabama Alumni Assoc. - East Tennessee, and an Elder in the Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Hank was an avid University of Alabama fan and follower of Alabama football since 1937.

He is survived by his daughters, Lou Anne (Edward Duncan) Lamar, Patty (Patrick J.) Natter; son Henry J. (Loretta McClean) Culbert, Jr.; grandchildren, Matt (Mary Clay) Morgan, Anne (Tom) Landers, Molly (Sean) Rooney, Patrick (Reetu) Natter, John Natter, Carrie Culbert, Ann Franklin Lamar, Tommy Gibson and Daniel Gibson; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Margaret Morgan, Jack and Elle Landers, and Ashna and Andrew Natter. Funeral services will be held, Sunday, December 30, 2018, 6:00pm at Faith Bible Fellowship Church with Rev. Chris Bunn officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Graveside interment services will be held Monday, 11:00am at Seahorn’s Chapel Cemetery, Dandridge, TN. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial gifts be made to a charity of choice.
